Contribution Documentation & Self Reflection

I came up with an idea to make a game based on 17th August Celebration, since I feel like most of Indonesian have experience the games played during this celebration at least once, either at school, house complex, or even village. My teammate and I brainstormed the minigame that we should include in the games, of course it has be a classic 17th August game and can be develop by using construct 2. Eventually we made the final decision of this five games; makan kerupuk , tarik tambang, panjat pinang, gobak sodor, balap karung. Our plan was just to divide and conquer, pick a game and try to develop it.

I started the game by making the main map and player’s character movement and animation as well as adding NPCs and its dialogs. After that, I made the balap karung minigame which has the concept of a racing game except instead of cars its karung. Also, I added obstacle along the road to make the game more interesting ( rocks, barrels, buckets ). By that time my teammate completed the makan kerupuk and tarik tambang game, so I tried to combine all the minigame so its accesible from the main map.

Then so i thought that the map looks so dull, it doesn’t have any 17th of August Celebration spirit. That’s why I made a couple of Indonesian sprites to spark up the map. This include Indonesian animated flag, banners, kerupuk stand, panjat pinang pole. I was planning to do panjat pinang game but I was having trouble of coming up with a concept of the game. I know the concept is its a climbing competition to get a price at the top, but it is very hard for me to develop that in construct 2. I tried making it a platfomer and a jumping game but it just looks strange, doesn’t quite capture the essence of panjat pinang ( it looks more like lompat pinang ). I was in a stumped, so i decided to continue on with the other stuff first.

In result I made the home screen using the same method as the main map I did. Next I sat down and planned the button configuration, which should be in the home and which should be in the main map. After all of that, I applied the concept and made all of the buttons and its pop up if its clicked, except for the sound settings because thats my teammate work since he’s doing the music as well. Furthermore, I designed the pop ups for each buttons such as the about page, help, sources, etc. This is the most time consuming and rigorous task for me, since I have to make the text letter by letter. Later on, I managed to make another layout which is a house interior that player can enter by interacting with the front door of a house in the main map.

Then I send the file to my teammate so he can add the music & sound effect, combine the gobak sodor game to the main map, and help me configure the you win or you lose setting pop up after the game ends. Finally I came up with an idea of treasure hunt game for panjat pinang game. The concept is that an old man posibly the ketua desa needs the player’s help to find all this bizzare items to put on top of the panjat pinang pole. After I developed that, the game is practically done.

My initial thought that the game had no problem and it should be easy work from here. It turns out I was wrong, there is a lot of tiny bugs for the game, like the pop up doesn’t show, some sound effect is bugged, the text is tilted, button is asymmetrical, etc. My teammate send capx files back and forth at least 5 times fixing bugs we figured out one after the other. We shared a google drive folder from the start to share all assets, files, and more. This stuff really makes me personally fed-up to continue on. In the end though, I just need a break and continue later on. After about 3 days we managed to fixed all the bugs and finished the game. I was pretty proud of the end result of our game, it was a pleasent experience and a fun project overall.
